Bringing focus closer to home

March 11, 2009 - Lee Smith
We're trying something new on our editorial page these days. A renewed and intense push to bring issues and opinion closer to home.

The main way readers will see this is in columns involving issues related to Minnesota, as well as Iowa. We recently have offered columns by Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Tim Penny of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation and Phil Krinkie of the Taxpayers League of Minnesota, among others.

There are no regionally syndicated columnists, so getting copy consistently focusing on the state has been difficult. We also have had concerns that what has flowed in has been very self-involved. We have not wanted to give special interests or self-promoting politicians the spotlight. But these days, the former trickle of submissions to us coming by email has become a flood. There is a great deal to choose from, and some of it is quite informative. So we will be making an effort to get this information out to readers.

As always, we welcome letters to the editor. These will still have to come from our readers or those living in our coverage area.

You may see fewer nationally syndicated columnists, but we will still try to bring you those columns that do the most to inform. Our humor columnists — Dave Barry and Bruce Cameron — will remain firmly rooted in their respective slots, so no worries there for fans.
