"Fatty, get your butt off my keyboard!"

February 14, 2009 - Jennifer Brookens
That is the sentence that just came out of my mouth as I sat down to write this blog.

Two houseguests join the Brookens household once again: Fatty and Stinky (not their real names, but they seem to take those nicknames with a sense of pride.) The cats' real names are much nicer, but our daughter enjoys the nicknames probably a little too much (will have to retrain them on their real names before Gramma comes back from her latest vacation).

Fatty is the social one, from sitting on computer keyboards and our sleeping torsos at 4 in the morning. He keeps trying to make friends with our bulimic cat, only to be rebuffed with a snarl and hiss. Not to be deterred, he'll still gallup after him down the hallway in the middle of the night (Meanwhile I keep having dreams about horse stampedes and thunderstorms).

Stinky is Fatty's running mate. Not as cuddly, but much more active. Any missing items are likely under the furniture. Stinky gets his nickname from the litterbox side of things ('nuff said). The two guests together keep the kitchen congested, the nights disruptive and our regular cat on edge. In fact, having competition seems to make the Brookens' cat a little more docile, even a sympathic character when he is normally obnoxious and demanding.

But the three stooges arrangement: Fatty, Stinky and Puker, have at least provided a little more amusement and light-heartedness for the household. All the cats are neutered and declawed, so there is little risk of serious harm. Just the potential of extra carpet cleaning, dustbuster and litterbox duties.
