Not on our dime ...

January 19, 2009 - Lee Smith
If you want a free glimpse into people's souls, all you have to do is get them an Internet account and let them post anonymous messages on the Web. It's not always pretty.

Our newspaper's Web site, along with many others, is routinely visited by people who think it's cute, funny, deep, important or interesting to be cheap, uncivil, crude and vulgar. We try to cull this trash as best we can, but it's not possible to keep up with these Web-posters 24/7. As we remain vigilant, we hope readers will forgive us those moments when inappropriate comments cannot be tended to.

For those interested in helping keep the Web site clean, please sign up as a member. This will allow you to send us notice of vile comments that do not belong in the public marketplace of ideas.

We hope readers know they are free to comment on our stories, opinions, etc., as long as they are not using swear words, being blatantly offensive to others' race, color, sex, creed, etc., or trashing others' beliefs in a vicious way. None of these things adds to the public discourse in any way. In fact, it subtracts from it, and we won't allow it.
