December 29, 2008 - Jennifer Brookens
As a radio and pop culture junkie, I used to find myself relishing the year-end countdowns, from the biggest songs of the year to the year's biggest events. We recently had our local Top 10, and all three stories that made the top 10 from my beat were less than pleasant. (The most upbeat one being an asbestos scare for the North Kossuth kids going to school in Bancroft, which ultimately ended up being a false alarm.)
2008 wasn't all gloom-and-doom, but the majority of the headlines have been on the negative: the bottom dropping out of the economy, bubbles bursting, no end to war, businesses and jobs disappearing, and everyone is either broke or more broke than before. How can you possibly get geeked up about that? Yes, these are defining times, and our national election was one for the history books. And who knows just how 2008 might later be viewed in history. Perhaps it will be the beginning of the end, or the darkness just before the dawn.
But I think the biggest countdown of all this New Year's Eve will be kissing this year good-bye. Here's to having a better 2009... cheers!
