That's a lot of stories

December 17, 2008 - Lee Smith
The Sentinel has undergone many changes over the years, but one that stands out for me during my tenure (the past 12 years) is the creation of the "Lifestyle" section in July 2003. This section, which runs in Saturday's paper, generally includes features and lighter news. I put together this section on Wednesdays and print out a copy to proof. Somehow I started saving each of these, and now there is a signficant (orderly) stack of them on one of my office shelves.

What amazes me most when I consider this mound is all the work that reporters and photographers put into the many stories. And the many area citizens they have featured. I calculate there have been an average of three feature stories per section, with probably three times as many subjects. That works out to 780 stories in the past five years, focusing on more than 2,300 people.

Reporters will say they sometimes struggle to find feature stories, but this record indicates they are adept at doing so. I hope this blog serves as public acknowledgement on my part of their efforts.

Now, if you ever have what you consider to be a great feature story idea, feel free to give me, or one of the reporters, a call. Toll free is (800) 598-5597. Locally, it's (507) 235-3303. Obviously, we'd love to hear your story.
