Bombarded by fourth graders
December 23, 2013 - Jennifer Brookens
I've started writing this blog three times in the past week. All three times were thwarted with some other urgent matter, which is known to happen in the newspaper biz. But with every story I've written and every photo taken during that time, there is one incident this month that I think will stay with me the rest of my life.
It was the one warm day of the week, and I got a call from one of the teachers at the elementary school. The class was having a "snow day," by making snowmen and snow angels. I already had a few photos for the day, but I decided why not.
Sure enough, toward the back of the lot of the school, there was a line of snowmen, and the giant snow caterpillar. As I got there, the kids were putting on the finishing touches on their works. Then the teacher led the kids to an area of untouched snow, and had them lie down and make a chain of snow angels. Naturally, every kid wanted to make sure "their" photo was going to be the one in the paper.
As they finished, the teacher then announced, "Let's all thank Jennifer for coming over and taking photos of us, by each of us giving her a big hug!" I already knew this teacher was a hugger, so I didn't mind. But what surprised me was how enthusiatic each child responded to this... I know not every person is a hugger, so I was willing to accept the hugs from those that wanted to. Yet every girl and boy there did so eagerly and sincere; no "touch shoulders and pat-pats" from this crowd!
Honestly, it was the best thing that happened to me that day (and somewhat made up for not winning the MegaMillion drawing the night before!) and the memory brings a smile to my face even on a day with -35 wind chill and my own two children fighting like crazy... Perhaps we need another snow day to warm up.
