Rain barrel puts resource to use
MAKING USE — Several rain gutter downspouts are redirected into a 1,060-gallon tank where the water is collected and used for watering newly planted grass at Hawkeye Food Service in Fairmont.
May 9, 2008
FAIRMONT — “Every one of those ran to an underground tile,” said Scott Akers at Hawkeye Food Service, pointing to the rain gutters now directed into a translucent 1,060-gallon barrel.
Akers, vice president and general manager of the Fairmont facility, learned about Martin Soil & Water Conservation District’s rain barrel program several weeks ago and decided to apply the concept at Hawkeye.
“I’m not a tree hugger,” he said. ... “It’s a responsible thing to save your rain water. I grew up on a farm, and we did it. ...

What is best to tackle stress?
Wed, May 7, 2008 @ 5:36PM
I can’t believe it’s May already. It seems like the last month flew by. Actually, it went so fast that I forgot my monthly column was due last week. Oops. April was an interesting month. I’m happy to say I lost a pound, although I certainly wish I could say I’ve lost more. Still, a loss is a loss, right? When I say April was an interesting month, it was for several reasons. First of all, I’m trying to get used to working mornings at my new part-time job. I wrote last month that I recently started working at Marketlink to supplement my income, and while I enjoy the job, I’m still adjusting to working longer hours. A significant change in a person’s schedule can cause stress, which as any of us trying to lose weight know, can lead to gaining a few excess pounds. Luckily I managed to avoid that trap, but it wasn’t all my doing. You see, I’ve been sick to some degree or another for a good portion of April. It started out with the flu.

Finally clearing the air ...
Tue, May 6, 2008 @ 5:47PM
The Sentinel, and more specifically reporter Jennifer Brookens, has been having quite a ride recently with the story involving possible asbestos contamination at the St. John's school site in Bancroft, Iowa. The building houses the elementary school for North Kossuth Schools. First came the possibility of contamination, then reports from the district that asbestos levels in the air were as much as 150 higher than safe. Finally, the school found its previous test encompassed all materials floating in the air and that their was no unsafe level of asbestos. In the meantime, students were pulled from the school, parents went nuts and newspaper editorials questioned why more wasn't done sooner. All and all, it was very unfortunate. Especially since all the panic was for naught. While everyone involved was acting according to the knowledge they had at the time, thus believing they were doing the right thing, the final result was simply a public relations black eye for North Kossuth.
